1. Who is responsible for your information
Betting Sites CA is an independent guide to sports betting sites in Canada, and we are responsible for the personal information we collect through the Website. We have appointed a Privacy Officer (the person in charge of the protection of personal information), who can be reached at [email protected].
2. Scope of this policy
This policy applies to the Website, our newsletters and our communications with you. It does not apply to the betting sites we review. When you click through to a betting operator, that operator becomes responsible for the information you give it, under its own privacy policy.
We are not a gambling operator. We do not collect payment card or bank details, betting account credentials, or government-issued identity documents, and we ask you not to send them to us.
3. Information we collect
Information you give us
- name and email address when you use our contact form or subscribe to a newsletter;
- the content of your messages, feedback and correction reports;
- your marketing and cookie preferences.
Information collected automatically
- IP address, device type, browser, operating system and language settings;
- pages viewed, time spent, referring page, and date and time of visit;
- approximate location (country or province level) derived from your IP address, used for analytics and security;
- clicks on outbound and affiliate links, including links that pass through a redirect on our own domain so that we can count clicks, and cookie or similar identifiers (see our Cookie Policy).
Information from third parties
- analytics and security providers, which give us usage and threat information about the Website;
- affiliate networks and betting operators, which may send us aggregated or pseudonymous conversion reports confirming that a sign-up or deposit came through our link, generally without revealing who you are.
4. How we use your information and on what basis
| Purpose | Information used | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Operate, secure and improve the Website | Technical and usage data | Legitimate business purposes reasonable in the circumstances |
| Answer your messages and correction reports | Name, email, message content | Your request (implied consent) |
| Send newsletters and updates | Name, email, preferences | Your express consent (CASL) |
| Measure audience and performance | Cookie identifiers, usage data | Your consent, through our cookie banner |
| Track affiliate referrals and receive commission | Click identifiers, conversion reports | Your consent, through our cookie banner |
| Prevent fraud, abuse and security incidents | IP address, logs | Legitimate business purposes |
| Meet legal obligations | Any of the above as required | Legal requirement |
You can withdraw your consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions. In line with Quebec law, technologies that can identify, locate or profile you are switched off until you choose to turn them on.
5. Email marketing
We send newsletters only with your consent, in line with Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). Every email includes a clear unsubscribe link, and we process unsubscribe requests promptly and within 10 business days. You can also write to [email protected]. We keep a record of your consent for at least three years after you unsubscribe, as the law requires us to be able to prove it.
8. Storage and transfers outside your province or Canada
Some of our providers store or process information in other provinces or countries, including the United States. Information held abroad is subject to the laws of that country, which may allow authorities to access it. We use contracts and technical safeguards to protect information in transit, and, as Quebec law requires, we assess the privacy risks before communicating information outside Quebec.
9. How long we keep information
| Type of information | Retention period |
|---|---|
| Messages and correction reports | Up to 24 months after our last exchange with you |
| Newsletter subscription | Until you unsubscribe; we then keep a minimal suppression record so that you are not emailed again, and our consent record for at least three years |
| Analytics data | Up to 26 months |
| Affiliate click and conversion data | Up to 24 months |
| Server and security logs | Up to 90 days |
When information is no longer needed, we securely delete it or anonymise it.
10. Security
We protect personal information with measures suited to its sensitivity, including encryption in transit, access controls limited to staff who need them, provider due diligence and incident-response procedures. No system is completely secure. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and, where Quebec residents are affected, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec.
11. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you may:
- ask what personal information we hold about you and get a copy, including in a structured, commonly used format where the law provides for portability;
- ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- withdraw your consent to our use of your information, or ask us to stop or limit certain uses;
- ask us to delete your information or to stop disseminating it, where the law gives you that right;
- ask how we handle your information, and challenge our compliance.
To make a request, email [email protected]. We may ask you to confirm your identity first. We respond within 30 days and do not normally charge a fee. We do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, or your own provincial privacy regulator.
12. Visitors from outside Canada
The Website is aimed at people in Canada. If you visit from elsewhere, your information is transferred to and handled in Canada and the other countries where our providers operate. We will respect the privacy rights that apply to you under your local law, to the extent they apply to us.
13. Age restriction
The Website is for adults of legal gambling age (19 in most provinces and territories, 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under that age. If we learn that we have, we will delete it promptly. Parents or guardians who believe a minor has contacted us can write to [email protected].
14. Responsible gambling
Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Free, confidential support is available in every province and territory. See our Responsible Gambling page for self-exclusion options and helplines.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in our practices or the law. The “Last updated” date shows the latest version. For material changes, we will post a notice on the Website and, where we hold your email address for newsletters, may tell you by email.
